the same. One surprise from the research during that decade was that adolescent boys still held traditional views towards girls (Suitor & Reavis, 1995). This was remarkable in view of
all the liberation movements in the 1960s and 1970s. Girls felt that cheerleading was the way to achieve prestige in their school and boys believed sports would gain that prestige.
It is important to note that by the end of that decade both cars and cheerleading had decreased in importance to teenagers. In the 1980s, teenagers spent hours on the
phone. They even visited each other frequently. They would get together after school and after the games. Individuals who were teenagers at any teenage year would have been born between
1962 and at the latest 1977 (this calculation uses 1980-1990 and ages 13-18). People born in these years are typically referred to as Generation Xers. They were more materialistic than
their parents. They did not feel the same degree of pressures about failure as their parents felt. Thirty years later, we have the a generation of teenagers who feel
enormous pressure for success. They face huge challenges because there are so many peers urging them to try sex, drugs, alcohol, and other behaviors that will do harm to them.
This is the Millennial Generation. They do not know the threat of a nuclear war, have no idea of what the USSR was or meant, they do not even know
what a Sony Walkman is. On the other hand, AIDS has always been in their lifetimes and this represents a fear for them. They are more self-reliant, they are more
adventurous, they tend to believe in close relationships, and they are tied into electronic social media (Center for Ministry Development, 2010). They do not know a world without computers and
