In the case of Prospero, in Shakespeares work, he was a Duke and a man of power. He was essentially sent off into the sea with his daughter aboard a
boat that was clearly expected to fall apart: "In few, they hurried us aboard a bark, Bore us some leagues to sea; where they prepared A rotten carcass of a
boat, not riggd, Nor tackle, sail, nor mast; the very rats Instinctively had quit it" (Shakespeare I ii). They found themselves on an island and there he, and his daughter,
have lived for many years. In the case of Crusoe he experienced a similar situation wherein he also found himself on an
island, although his circumstances were different. He was not sent their purposefully but experienced a storm and a shipwreck which landed him, alone, on an island. He was not sent
off to die but rather became a victim of nature and fate it would seem. Prior to becoming stranded on the island
Prospero was a successful and powerful man. In fact he was so successful that his brother began to make plans to get rid of him because of his jealousy of
