that much of what we hear concerning women of the Islamic faith is correct. The women of Islam, no matter how we look at it, are oppressed people who are
pushed aside and essentially abused in many physical and psychological ways. In the following paper we present that argument. Women of Islam In understanding how many may well argue
that women are not oppressed by the faith of Islam we note that, historically speaking, women did have rights. The Islamic religion is not a religion that originally set out
to oppress women and in all honesty, "For his day, the Prophet Muhammad was a feminist. The doctrine he laid out as the revealed word of God considerably improved the
status of women in 7th century Arabia" (Time, 2001; p. 50). For example, while many pagan societies of the time buried unwanted female infants alive, "Islam prohibited the practice. Women
had been treated as possessions of their husbands; Islamic law made the education of girls a sacred duty and gave women the right to own and inherit property" (Time, 2001;
p. 50). In addition we note very forward thinking when we understand that "Muhammad even decreed that sexual satisfaction was a womans entitlement....The Prophet darned his own garments and among
his wives and concubines had a trader, a warrior, a leatherworker and an imam" (Time, 2001; p. 50). The history of the teachings is clearly one that indicates women
had status and were given opportunities in the Islamic faith. But, the religion has been used in most Muslim countries not to liberate but to entrench inequality. The Taliban, with
