The question of whether or not a synthesis can be achieved between Islamic law and the principles of Universal Human Rights is complex to say the least. Can
the tension that currently characterizes the relationship that exists between Islamic Law and Universal Human Rights principles be addressed while still maintaining Islamic authenticity? Numerous scholars have considered such
questions. Two that have added considerable insight to this question are Dale F. Eickelman and James Piscatori (1996). These authors have observed that Muslim politics are best viewed
in a fluid rather than a static form for they have "multiple and shifting contests" and are:
"neither unique nor fixed in form, content or interpretations....in the venture of Islam, Muslim politics constitutes the field on which an intricate pattern of cooperation and contest over
form, practice and interpretation takes place" (Monshipouri and Motameni, 2000, pg. 709) Such a view
is of particular importance when we are considering Universal Human Rights. In the modern world globalization is sweeping over all cultures, religions, and political systems. Numerous world entities
have agreed that all humans were entitled to certain basic rights and freedoms without discrimination in regard to:
"without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status" (Office for
