Islam has reached around the world not only in terms of its political ideology but also in terms of the impacts it has
made on religion, material culture, and industry. Islams influence among western countries in regard to political viewpoints and policy, religion, art, industry and architecture alike are of particular interest.
Unfortunately, the clash which has existed between Islam and the western world has resulted in many misperceptions and misunderstandings as to exactly what Islamic influence has meant over time.
By some views that influence has been more positive than negative. In truth, Islam has made many invaluable contributions to the West. The extremist factions of Islam,
however, are quickly undermining those contributions as actions of violence and hatred are becoming more commonly associated with the worlds perception of Islam than are such beautiful contributions as those
that continue to exist in art and architecture. To understand Islams influence in the west we first have to understand the basics of
Islam itself. Hodgsons (1990) "The Venture of Islam: Conscience and History in A World Civilization" provides an invaluable comparison of the culture of Islam and the occidental world.
The book details the impacts Islam has had from a religious perspective in particular. We learn that Islam is actually a young religion in comparison to Judaism and Christianity.
We also learn, however, that Islam not only acknowledges the validity of Christianity and Judaism, those who practice Islam believe the religion to be a fulfillment of both.
