Discussion From about the 9th-14th centuries, the Islamic world led the globe in the pursuit of science and knowledge; they also made "important contributions in philosophy and literature" (The Islamic world to 1600). Part of the Muslims progress was due to the fact that they took the ideas from cultures they had conquered, or come in contact with, as their empire expanded in the 7th and 8th centuries; these included the Persian, Indian, Chinese and Greek civilizations among others (The Islamic world to 1600). Muslim scholars took books from other cultures and translated them into Arabic, then used them to develop their own ideas (The Islamic world to 1600). For example, they took "Aristotles philosophy, Ptolemys geography, Hippocrates medicine ... and either added to or contradicted them with new discoveries" (The Islamic world to 1600). Muslim ideas made their way to medieval Europe where they influenced learning until the Renaissance (The Islamic world to 1600). It appears that Europeans recognized the value of the Muslim culture, and began translating their works in such fields of study as mathematics, astronomy and medicine from Arabic into Hebrew, Latin, and other European languages (The Islamic world to 1600). In addition, Europeans were studying at Muslim universities, located mostly in Spain, by the 13th century (The Islamic world to 1600). Even after the Renaissance took hold, Europeans continued to study Islamic teachings; they did the same thing the Muslims did with the Greeks and other ancient civilizations: they used the Muslim work as a foundation for their own (The Islamic world to 1600).
