recent impact on the world has been more negative than positive. The wave of terrorism that has been attributed to the Muslim people will take centuries to remove from
world consciousness. Muslim terrorist attacks have been perpetrated not just in the Middle East but also in the Western World. The U.S. was brutalized with the September 11,
2001 destruction of New Yorks World Trade Center and the simultaneous attack on the Pentagon itself. Spain too has received blows from radical Muslims. The March 11, 2004
bombing of four commuter trains in Madrid Spain alone took countless lives and deepened the dark legacy that Islam is currently leaving in its wake. Other European countries have
taken their blows as well. Interestingly, medieval history (particularly the history of medieval Spain) is directly relevant to contemporary relations between the west and the Islamic world.
Despite popular perception, throughout much of history Islam has exerted an important influence on the West. This influence occurred even in the face of
the ideological and geographical separation that existed between Christians and Muslims throughout most of their history. Occidental religion in itself is diverse but it is essential represented by Christianity
and Judaism. While there are distinct differences between Islamic and Occidental culture, there are also many similarities. The worlds religions and cultures, however, are not static. Both
Islamic culture and occidental culture have undergone significant evolution over the years and much of this evolution can be attributed to the influences gained in the interaction between these cultures.
