Abstract Islam is often resented in the modern world. A careful review of Islams tenets, however, demonstrates
that most are based on concern for human and societal welfare. Islams prohibition against the use of intoxicants is one such tenet. This paper specifically examines that prohibition.
Segments of the Quran are quoted that specifically prohibit alcohol use and the justification for those prohibitions is discussed. These justifications center around alcohols negative impacts on both
individual and societal health. Introduction Islam, like the
rest of the worlds religions, provides guidance as to how an individual is supposed to live their life. This guidance includes both requirements and prohibitions. The word "Islam"
is defined as submission and peace in Arabic. Islam is a unique and comprehensive ideology which serves as a guide for the worldly as well as the spiritual pursuits
of its believers. It does so through its creed or doctrine, through its system of rules which direct believers actions. This direction is sometimes general in nature yet
it can be applied to specific components of our world. Other times this direction is quite explicit. One component of particular interest in both our modern world and
in the ancient world of Islam is alcohol. The thesis that Islam prohibits the consumption of alcohol and it does so quite specifically in Islams sacred text, the Quran,
