of the twentieth century.i The principal reason behind this debate, and the reason that it is debated so hotly, is the issue of "predictive prophecy," as defenders of the
position that the entire Book of Isaiah was written by the prophet feel that to deny this point, or the unity of the book as a whole, would be
to negate its "amazingly accurate predictive element of prophecy."ii The traditional position Isaiah has held that the entire book was written by the "prophet Isaiah of Jerusalem in the eighth
century BC (circa 740-700).iii However, this position is primarily based on attitudes toward scripture and prophecy, and not on historical scholarship. Brachter asserts, based on current historical and exegetical
scholarship that evidence leads to two conclusions. First of all, verses in Isaiah suggest that the Isaiah traditions extend over a period of time that dates from Isaiahs lifetime in
Jerusalem in the middle of the eighth century BC to the "post exilic era in the early fifth century BC" and that there are three sections addressing three distinct
time periods.iv The first section, chapters 1-39, of Isaiah is the time period that is applicable to this investigation. These were composed during the Assyrian period of Israels history
and is directed associated with the ministry of Isaiah of Jerusalem, which spanned 740 to 700 BC.v Bratcher cautions that this does not mean that all of the material in
these chapters dates from this period, as there are clearly some verses that have been determined to be later additions that were added during the Babylonian period; however, it does
