other side are theses that the police do not target minorities, and that they do get fair trails, but there are just more criminals who are from minority groups. Perhaps
this is attributable to the fact that they have fewer life chances. The culture of poverty thesis for example is a way of providing a semblance of an explanation for
why there are more black people who are criminals. Does the criminal justice system really discriminate against racial minorities? Those who claim that there is discrimination, back up their rhetoric
with statistics. For example, at the "Death Penalty Information Center," the following statistics re cited: "Two of the countrys foremost researchers on race and capital punishment, law professor David Baldus
and statistician George Woodworth, along with colleagues in Philadelphia, have conducted a careful analysis of race and the death penalty in Philadelphia which reveals that the odds of receiving a
death sentence are nearly four times (3.9) higher if the defendant is black" ("The Death Penalty in Black and White: Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Decides," 2010). It is hard
to dispute this observation. Yet, the other side of the coin contends that there are more black people on trial and while the statistics probably factor in that observation, when
a system is inundated with one minority group, the statistics will probably reveal something that suggests things are skewed. While again, some take this as blatant racism, others claim there
