there is sufficient demand. In many instances there are strategies that seek to combine different special interest areas together in order to increase demand. In some cases this may be
able to create a synergy, however, there is also the potential of alienation when two different interest groups are being targeted with the same holiday and tourism offerings. If
we look at one area of special interest, that of eco-tourism, an area of tourism that is important to many areas, from Australasia and the Indian Ocean to the US
and Europe, there is an increasing demand. If we use this as an example there are areas where a duel role with the interest groups can be seen, but at
the same time there is also a potential clash and route of alienation with the different interest groups. Eco-tourism. in general terms,
is perceived as a form of tourism that has a neutral effect on the environment, whilst it may not emancipate the environment, it may preserve or better it. It is
due to this that the idea of mass tourism is seen as a contradiction to ecotourism, masses of tourists create mess and pollution, their needs are inherently those that will
destroy the environment, pollution from transport and even human waste. This will also impact on the local cultures and sociality, changing the environment totally. It is an increasing awareness by
tourists of these potential dangers that have to be balanced with the needs of countries especially where there are developing countries. The solution has been the development of the eco-tourism.
