used. At the time, he was giving a speech to the National Press Club (Cowley & Parker, 1996). The concept was prompted due to a surprise bombing of Marine barracks
in 1983 (Cowley & Parker, 1996). Authors explain the intent of the doctrine: "The Weinberger address followed President Ronald Reagans decision to withdraw the U.S. Marines from Lebanon and was
therefore intended to summarize the lessons learned from this debacle in the hope that similar improper uses of American forces could be prevented in the future" (Cowley & Parker, 1996,
p.512). In essence, the Weinberger Doctrine set parameters. One may argue about the ideas to come from the doctrine. Is it good to set such limits? Was the administration under
political pressure when they came up with the idea? While it may be true that the doctrine was conceived to fill a need, that does not mean it does not
have merit. A student queries as to whether the Weinberger Doctrine is Clauswitzian. One source does claim that the Weinberger Doctrine "was recognized by many as a valid model with
