by the way in which the UK is one of the central EU powers. As such, we need to examine the evidence to assess if the UK is an awkward
partner, or one with a higher level of individualism that adds to the richness of the union rather than detracting from it. Looking at the UK there are
many differences, it is isolated geographically being an island, rather than having land boarders with partners, the county is also one of the few not to adopt the single currency.
Even the approach to the law is also different, with the literal meaning take precedence over the European approach where it is the spirit of the law that is uppermost
in interpretation (Weatherill and Beaumont, 2000). These are all differences, but they do not necessarily indicate an awkwardness. However, looking at more recent events, such as the Gulf war
and the siding with the US rather then the EU majority has placed a strain on EU relationships. Moreover, the UK was not alone, Spain also adopted this approach, and
as such the political differences may be seen as only that; political differences. Yet this is a political union, and as such the divergence has created some awkwardness. To
examine this we need to remember the foundation of the EU. Today the EU is made up of Germany, France, Italy, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Portugal, Sweden,
