for unit 1 the there will be the "the reading of a range of texts, particularly narrative and persuasive texts, in order to comprehend, appreciate and analyse the ways in
which texts are constructed and interpreted" (VCAA, 2006, p12). This places literature in a contextual setting, where students need to be able to relate to the text, Furthermore, the study
of the English language is seen as encouraging a students personal develop to facilitate their ability to "participate socially, economically and culturally in Australian Society" (VCAA, 2006, p6). In
this context the studying of Australian literature, as part of a boarder curriculum has the potential to increase cognitive awareness within the student, of their place in society and in
the Australian society in which they are living. Literature plays an important role, although much is based on fiction, the texts will often reflect a reality. It will reflect themes
and ideas that are prevalent in society, often highly reflect of the culture in which it is written or set. One example of an Australian novel is that of
Christina Steads The Man Who Loved Children, a fictionalisation of the authors own childhood. The novel sees changes; there is a move of location away from Sydney where the authors
childhood was based, to Annapolis and Baltimore (Craven, 2007). However, the themes that are found within the texts are those which are highly relevant in understanding Australian culture. The
themes include the challenges of adolescence, generational clashes and themes of feminism all of which relate to Austrian ideas and values with a text that may be seen as both
