Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 6 page paper is a position paper. The writer argues against the idea that the family in America is not really changing, it is just the perception of family that is changing. Coontz argues that statistics can be used to give an impression of change, but that there are not really any more single parents and that the reason divide figures are higher is due to long life with marriages lasting forty years or more also higher. The writer argues that this is not totally correct, whilst some changes may be perception based, there are also other changes which cannot be avoided due to the impact of culture on the family and the way in which American culture is changing. The bibliography cites 6 sources.

father and a stay at home mother, who cooks cleans and looks after the children. Families that go against these trends such as working mothers and single mothers are
seen as following a path that is not in the best interests of their families,. However, it has been argued that this perception has never been accurate. In the book
by Coontz (n.d) that the changes which are perceived today are not real changes, but patterns which have been present all along, it is only tat they are being noticed
today, or that changes in related factors arte bring them to light. Factors such as the married to unmarried birth ratio are cited, indicating that the fall in the married
birth ratio has made it look like there is an increase in the number of unmarried mothers giving birth, but this is not the case, it is merely a statistical
adjustment due to a drop in one figure. However, this argument, which states that the family has not really changed over the years, even if ewe feel that it has
is also one that can be disagreed with. Whilst statistics may show that there is an increasing divider rate, but also an increasing number of marriages that survive for forty
years, and as such longer lives are changing the patterns and not less commitment to marriage, Coontz makes a strong case, but I do not feel it is string enough
to say that the change in family life is one that is only that of perception and not reality. The role of the family in society is one that has
to change and adapt, as the concept of family may be the corner stone of society, but it is also a cultural reflection of ethics and values of that society.
