theory and analysis. The meaning of strategy in business term is defined by the English dictionary as "A plan of action or policy in business or politics" (Oxford Concise
English Dictionary 1991). Although accurate this can be taken further "Strategic management is synthesis of analysis and planning for value creation and delivery" (Herbane and Rouse, 2001). Both of these
indicate the need for planning and analysis. It can be argued strategic thinking for businesses only emerged in the western world in
the 1920s with Alfred Sloan in such companies as General Motors. However, the first civilian use of the word strategy was by Socrates (in a political context), and the study
of military strategy is ancient, examples include; Sun Tzus The Art of War; (c500BC), Alexander and Philip at Chaeronea in 338BC (Quinn et al 1991:6-10), and then later with The
Prince by Nicolo Machiavalli c.505. All these studies have certain common traits, all call for clear and defined goals consolidated by decisive action which retains the flexibility to respond
to changing circumstances, along with the ability to analyze the situation and utilize original thinking. The role of information gathering and analysis
is important in business. There are a range of strategic thinkers over the centuries that are utilized in business writing to demonstrate the need for the logical approach to business.
