of whether it is possible to speak a private language, and this has become known as Wittgensteins Private Language Argument. Assessing the viability of Wittgensteins initial argument and his
later challenges to this argument requires a view of some of the central perspectives and the assessment of language as well as the function of language as a component of
culture. The Private Language Argument Ludwig Wittgensteins private language argument is based on the belief that words in any language and their referenced meawnsing can only be
truly known to the speaker himself, and so language is innately private (Private Language). More specifically, Wittgenstein presents the initial argument that any language that is used references
specific sensations, specific private emotions, specific viewpoints, and that the language itself cannot inherently be transferred to others. Wittgenstein argues: "The Words of this language are to refer
to what can be known only to the speaker, to his immediate, private, sensations. So another cannot understand the language" (Private Language). When a child describes a leaf
as "green," the concept of green is relative to the childs experiences, and what that child senses as green may not be the same as the what others experiences as
green. The general assumption is that everything that is the color of a leaf is green, but the experiential views of that color may vary from person to person.
This example demonstrates the personalized nature of language and of experience related through language, processes that are introduced in Wittgensteins initial arguments regarding private language. There are other
