and, if we are honest, we recognize the fact that the government and the public always criticizes the most successful companies. Remember AT&T? IBM, Microsoft? Despite the supposed belief in
hard work leads to success and those who do the work should be rewarded, the fact is that any company that is hugely successful will have a very large group
of detractors. Of the major discount type stores, Wal-Marts prices are always the lowest. Studies have shown that the average shopper at Wal-Mart earns $35,000 per year (Tierney
and Krugman, 2006). Compare that to $50,000, which is the average income of Targets customers (Tierney and Krugman, 2006). Wal-Mart fills an important gap in the retail industry by offering
the lowest prices, allowing lower-income persons to obtain what they need. Unlike AT&T, IBM and Microsoft, there are no antitrust issues concerning Wal-Mart. The criticism is about how they treat
employees, salaries and benefits, the kinds of subsidies the company receives, and the pressure they put on suppliers. These are the issues that have put Wal-Mart in the headlines in
recent years. It is true that Wal-Mart changed the retail industry (Pavilion, 2004). They use technology to its greatest advantage and they have cut operational costs. One phrase we often
