This has lead to much criticism of the software industry and problem such as the productivity paradox, where productivity appears to decrease with the introduction of technology (Patterson, 2000, Lichtenberg, 1995). The question may be the way that technology has been used, but it is also an issue regarding the quality of the software used (Patterson, 2000). With increasing attention paid to the software that is used and the way that it is written to meet needs the role of quality software. With many problems of legacy systems, increasing and changing demands and companies becoming more aware of the need for quality software and the efficiencies that well written software will create or the problems or challenges that that badly designed software can cause (Foley, 2001). In any industry as there is a move toward maturity and customers knowledge increases reducing the level of asymmetry in the industry there is increased pressure on both price and quality, often the increased knowledge results in the search for value (Hooley et al, 2003). This means quality is being demanded and sought by companies, in the case of software, as with any other product, it is for what the software can achieve and the benefit it will bring rather than for the item in its own right (Kotker, 2003).
