a world where lower class citizens can fly with the elite and visit the same haunts. Indeed, technology has brought prices down so even the poor can afford automobiles and
cell phones and cable television. Things unimagined in the past are now possible. Yet, there is the idea that technology is not good. Aside form arguments that go to globalization
problems and uneven distribution of goods, there is also the idea that the rich/poor gap increases with technology. One example is the 2000 election where Florida voters were purportedly disenfranchised.
Why? They had shoddy machines or no machines at all and their votes were never properly counted. Those in districts with high technology and machines in good repair did not
have the same problem. At the same time, most would agree that technology is good. It is equated with progress. However, during the late 1960s, Mesthene wrote a piece on
the subject that created quite a controversy. Mesthenes (1969) "The Role of Technology in Society" explores the significance of technology. He writes: "A society that undertakes to foster technology on
a large scale, in fact, commits itself to social complexity and to facing and dealing with new problems as a normal feature of political life" (1969, 55). Mesthene sees technology
as detrimental and provides examples. For instance, cities have mass transit and this innovation has seemingly widened the gap between rich and poor (1969). One can cite many reasons why
technology has negative consequences. Leo Marx (1987) concurs and suggests that technology is not necessarily synonymous with progress and in fact little social progress is accomplished by it. One question
looms large. Does technology harm society? McDermott (1969) does not think so and writes an essay entitled "Technology: The opiate of the Intellectuals." In it, he provides an answer
