only necessary to observe some of the trends in society today. In fact, one of the very best ways to see what a society values and how it operates is
to observe where it spends its money. A student who does that will probably notice that, for example, professional athletes make thousands of times what teachers do. And yet if
he or she were to ask most people if they value their childrens education more than a football game, they would answer yes, absolutely. But the money tells a different
story: they will pay hundreds or thousands of dollars on tickets, souvenirs, TV passes, etc., and support enormous player salaries through these purchases, but they will not consider spending even
a fraction of this money to pay the person who spends more time with their children than anyone else. Clearly, Americans claims to love their children are grossly exaggerated; they
would much rather watch sports than worry about education. This is a crude example, but a fair one, of the fundamental selfishness of this society. The self-involvement starts at the
very top. Today President Bush vetoed a childrens health care measure; his veto has even the Republicans angry, because it will hit our most vulnerable citizens-low income children-the hardest. (The
fact that this move will also make it very difficult for any Republicans to get elected has probably not escaped their notice.) The reasons for the veto seem threadbare, mostly
having to do with the fear that giving health care to children is a sort of "thin edge of the wedge," and would then lead to having or provide health
care for adults too. The fact that a great many people would ask, "Well, whats wrong with that?" has not crossed his mind. Instead, he has apparently put his unpopular
