controversial has been that of Scientology, in many countries scientology has had to fight, sometimes winning and sometimes losing, for recognition as a religion. The most prominent areas are the
US and Germany, with argument focusing on whether this is truly a religion or if it is predominantly a business or as Kent (1999) describes it a "multi-faceted transnational corporation
that has religion as only one of its many components". In US the organisation appears to have gained general acceptance, but there is still criticism over the practices associated with
the organisations, in Germany while individual freedoms may be protected, the organisation is not generally accepted as religion and the state has seen its presence and practices as a threat
to democracy. To consider whether or not scientotogy should be accepted as a religion we first need to consider how a religion is defined and then look at the
practices and consider how or why not scientology may be seen as a religion and understand the controversy over its status. Paragament (2001) argues that definition will always be
subjective reflecting the individuals own perception of religion and belief and that as a whole that can be taken not as definition, but as partial descriptions of what is included
in religion and what is not included in religion and as such definitions or descriptive of the term religion can never b fully descriptive and inclusive of all elements. Goody
(1961) appears to adopt the same approach stating that religion cannot be defined and as such does not try to define it only describe certain attributes that are present.
