those who plan for services such as welfare services it is important to ascertain if there is a link between extended education and potential salary. The link is one which is assumed, but it is also a link that may not be as strong as it was in the past where there were clear delineation between white and blue collar workers, and before there were the emergence of new technologies and the demand for a wider range of skills. In any community there will always be the story of an individual who has made good with a poor background that has been able to get a good job or start their own business and earn a good wage. However, these are exception and although there is some anecdotal evidence of the ability to earn a high wage regardless of educational background the ongoing assumption is still that of the association of higher earnings being directly correlated with higher levels of education. The question that this research will undertake to asses is whether or not there is a direct and signification correlation between the length of time spent in education and the annual salary earned. To assess this we will undertake an hypothesis test, for this we need to state an hypothesis and a null hypothesis (Curwin and Slater, 1998). H1 There is a significant direct positive correlation between the time an individual has spent in education and the salary that they earn, so the longer an individual has spent in education the larger the average salary observed will be.
