culture appears to be ("Richard Rorty," 2008). Along those lines is the idea that people have to free themselves from the " governing metaphors of mind and knowledge
in which the traditional problems of epistemology and metaphysics ... are rooted" ("Richard Rorty," 2008). Rorty is most interested in epistemological behaviorism ("Richard Rorty," 2008). This is
something that could lead to charges of either subjectivism or relativism ("Richard Rorty," 2008). In reality, there are charges that Rorty is a relativist. This position is by no
means isolated and it is no surprise. There is much controversy surrounding Rortys views. A student asks: "Does Richard Rortys conception of truth collapse into relativism?" Again, many believe this
to be the case. Hilary Putnam wrote: "I shall count a philosopher as a cultural relativist for our purposes if I have not been able to find anyone who can
explain to me why he isnt a cultural relativist. Thus I count Richard Rorty as a cultural relativist because his explicit formulations are relativist ones" (Putnam as cited in
Geras, 1995, p. 108). At face value, it does appear that Rortys ideas are not objective. Yet, the notion that no one can explain the antithesis of a viewpoint
is really not a good argument. The fact that Putnam believes that everyone is a relativist unless proven otherwise does indicate a bias. There is room for the other side
too. In order to make sense out of the controversy, it helps to look at Rortys ideas. First, it should be said that epistemological behaviorism is a concept that
