may be argued that with this type of structure there is a high degree of potential for organizational blindness; such as gender blindness, as a result of the functional structure. The concept of organizational blindness may be attractive, if there is not differentiation made for differences of individuals the potential for discrimination as a result of those differences is lessened. However, despite the initial arguments in favor of the presence of organizational blindness, which is also apparent in much of the literature were issues in terms of gender and organizational analysis are usually presented in gender neutral terms (Bendl, 2000), there has not be a total disregard for gender influences and issues within organizational analysis. There have been several commentators that have argued gender should play a far more prominent role in organizational analysis, authors such as Janet Wolff (1977) and Richard Brown (1976) put forward these ideas several decades ago (all quoted Wilson, 1996). However, Wilson (1996) argues that organizational theory is based on the current status quo which is reflective of the patriarchal society and male dominance. As such, it is argued, even where theories and analysis appears to take place in a gender neutral manner there are inherent biases. The questions is really are organizations blind? To start considering whether organizations are blind the concept of organizational analysis needs to be addressed, looking at what it is and how it is undertaken. Chia and Chia (1996) give a very interesting analogy that explains the concept of organizational analysis. A parallel is drawn between looking at a river and looking at an organization. When looking at the river it is recognizable through its external characteristics, is identifiable by the flowing water constrained by riverbanks (Chia and Chia, 1996). ...
