miracle? Can prayer work? Does this prove that God exists? It seems that there would be some continuity from the assumption that prayer works to the other assumption, which is that God exists. What other reasons might be for prayer to work? Of course, many people would say it was a coincidental occurrence. After all, most people who are ill do pray and many churches take prayer requests. After prayer one of two things will occur: the individual will die of cancer or be cured. If a person is cured, even when doctors claimed the individual would not have lived, is it true that the prayer really worked? There are of course different explanations for remission or cure. Some are attributable to medical intervention, but assuming there is none, many people believe that one is able to control their own bodies through thought. If someone has a good attitude about the disease and is optimistic-always praying, always hoping, not afraid of the future-they will do well. Yet, if prayer worked, it would have to work over and above the optimists view. First, this has been an important element of medicine of late. Psychological factors do affect outcome. For example, in one study, cancer patients who were able to learn the art of "conscious relaxation" not only were able to quit smoking and eat better, but showed improvement in immune functioning (Tyre, 2004). In another study of breast cancer patients, it seems that patients who did receive relaxation training in addition to therapy had higher T-cell functioning (Tyre, 2004). Studies such as these suggest a strong psychological component. Optimism can create an improved outcome. Yet, what explains this really?
