what makes a hero. A hero is an individual who has faults, but is likable. A hero is an individual who risks themselves for others, and who develops as a character, growing with lessons and experiences. Nora works within these confines because she sacrifices herself for her husband and eventually develops a strong enough character to seek enlightenment even at the cost of leaving her family. Noras heroic deed, in many ways, is her sacrifice involving putting herself at risk through trying to save her husband and his reputation through obtaining funds. It is, in many ways, an illegal act which would not necessarily lead us to think she was being heroic, but perhaps stupid. But, she is doing it for her husband and knows that she may be severely punished for her act. This knowledge offers her up as heroic. The play is clearly intended to be a story about Nora. While we see other characters we do not see any characters develop in the way that Nora does. For example, In the beginning of the story she is simply a doll, a pretty thing that plays her role as the good wife and mother. Her position is simple and we see this as Ibsen describes her as "little skylark twittering." Her husband calls her "little featherbrain," "little scatterbrain," "squirrel sulking", and "song bird" (Ibsen). In these descriptions we see Nora as a weak and simple woman with no identity of her own. However, as the story progresses we begin to see her taking action and trying to make life more comfortable, more complex perhaps, yet surely more developed in terms of her role.
