shocking to contemporary audiences and remains moving to this day. This paper considers Noras character and whether or not she is a good citizen. Discussion Nora, it can be argued,
is not only a good citizen but a model one. She does exactly what her husband and her society expect of her: she is a devoted wife and loving mother;
she obeys her husband without question; and she risks herself to save his life. But in the end, she discovers that he is not worth the sacrifices shes made for
him, and that leaves her without an identity. She leaves, as the modern jargon would have it, to find herself. Its difficult for todays audiences, even the most stubborn of
"macho men" to listen to Torvalds remarks to Nora and not cringe. He belittles her quite literally, by constantly referring to her as his "little" something or other. He calls
her his "little songbird" or his "little squirrel"; by doing so he not only reduces her status to that of an infant, plaything or possession, he also dehumanizes her.
She in turn has come to believe that this is the role she needs to play: that if she is in fact helpless and demure, that he will take care
of her. But as the play goes on, it becomes clear that she is far stronger than he is. She has been taught to fear scandal and ridicule, but when
it comes right down to it, she prefers leaving him - surely the most scandalous thing she could do - rather than live with a man who, she say, she
doesnt even know (Ibsen). It seems that Nora borrowed money from the character Krogstad, and forged her fathers signature to do so; Krogstad now knows about the forgery, and despite
