died a martyred hero in 1922 at the age of 31. As portrayed by the dashing Liam Neeson, there is no question that Collins was moved by passionate patriotism
and a devout desire for Irish liberation. He is depicted in the film as the quintessential twentieth-century revolutionary hero, who is forced by an increasingly violent world to take
drastic measures to protect his cause and his people. But many historians might disagree with this Hollywood interpretation of Michael Collins, and liken the rebel leader more to notorious
twentieth-century terrorist Saddam Hussein. Jordans film, which was 13 years in the making, is clearly a labor of love, but is it historically accurate? There are three points the
film makes that are historically correct. Although there is little mention of Collins early life and no exposure of the roots of his extreme patriotism, the film is correct
in pointing out that Collins was an effective leader and organizer who was instrumental in two of the most famous clashes between the Irish and the British - the Easter
Uprising of (April) 1916 and the so-called "Bloody Sunday" confrontation of November 21, 1921. It is also true that Collins had an uneasy political alliance with Sinn Fein President
Eamon De Valera, and this fueled the romantic rivalry between Collins and his one-time best friend, Harry Boland (Aidan Quinn), both of whom had fallen for the vivacious Kitty Kiernan
(Julia Roberts). It is true that when Kiernan chose Collins, the angry Boland betrayed his friend by becoming a member of De Valeras faction (Adams, 1997). Finally, despite
their disagreements, De Valera did indeed send Collins to London along with his Vice President Arthur Griffith, to sign a peace treaty with David Lloyd Georges British government in 1921,
