ways than not, marriage is an institution. The following paper examines how and why marriage is an institution. Is Marriage an Institution? When people think of marriage they
think of the union of two people. They envision a commitment between two people, primarily only involving those two people. From this respect many may argue it is not an
institution because it is two people and a commitment between two people. In order to better understand, however, how a marriage is an institution it is important to present
the definition of an institution. Merriam-Webster indicated that an institution is "a significant practice, relationship, or organization in a society or culture." What this means is that any particular practice
or relationship within a culture, or a society, can be considered an institution. Marriage is a practice. Marriage is the practice of creating a union between two people and it
has, throughout history, generally been associated with a foundation from which many people have children and establish lineage. When one thinks of marriage as an institution, aside from the
personal union, there are elements such as national censuses and legal affiliations and rights that are defined through marriage. Without a marriage a couple cannot establish a great deal of
legal foundations. this is because marriage is a very powerful cultural and social institution that lays the foundations of many alliances and legal connections. It is not simply the union
between two people. In this society people marry for many legal and financial reasons. These are reasons that go beyond marrying for love. They involved getting a spouses health insurance.
