Macbeth, the tragic hero, has (361). Indeed, at first glance, it does appear that Shakespeare took great pains to paint Macbeth as a tragic hero, and juxtaposed his female partner
to render him less evil. In embarking on this topic, the definition of "tragic hero" becomes important. What is a tragic hero? Milton explains in his preface to Samson
Agonistes, that tragedy has been seen as the gravest, most moral, and most profitable of all (ODair 215). But what is a tragic hero exactly? What are his unique
characteristics? The tragic hero is generally from an elite class and generally of excellent character (215). That is what renders it unlikely for the character to perform bad deeds, or
get into trouble, but also what makes it possible for him to be a hero, despite what he has done. In Othello for example, the work establishes for its
hero the idea of individual freedom and independence, and at the very least, self-determination, which is related to the cause or the source of the personal act as well as
its consequences (Hegel as cited in ODair 215). Hegel further argues that all tragic heroes must encounter a pattern of nobility, where he or she is destined
to err and endure misery despite his wisdom (215). In other words, a tragic hero is someone who is good, and endures a great deal of turmoil, and even commits
