Discussion The prompt for this paper is to consider whether or not Iago is the Devil. If he were literally Satan, who after all shows up frequently in literature and
music, Shakespeare would have made that clear, either by labeling him as such or giving him supernatural powers. In The Tempest, for instance, we know that Ariel is a supernatural
creature because he is described as one: he is referred to constantly as a "sprite" or "spirit." In addition, Ariel himself describes having turned into flame and gone aboard a
ship, where he divided himself: "Sometime Ild divide, / And burn in many places; on the topmast, / The yards and boresprit, would I flame distinctly" (I.ii.197-200). These actions can
have been performed only by a spirit. In that same play, we learn that Prospero is a real sorcerer; i.e., that he has magical powers; he describes raising a tempest:
"I have bedimmd / The noontide sun, calld forth the mutinous winds, / And twist the green sea and the azurd vault / Set roaring war" (V.i.41-44). If Iago had
any of this type of power, he would have either described it, or used it so that we know he is a demon. Therefore, the conclusion is that he is
not the devil, but a man who behaves in a manner that we would call devilish or satanic. He sets out to destroy, for no reason that is readily discernible,
another human being. How does he present himself to the audience? Iago and Roderigo open the play; Roderigo has three lines to set things up, which he does by telling
Iago of Othellos marriage to Desdemona. Iagos answering speech is over 30 lines long, and its a complaint. He whines to Roderigo that three influential men of the city tried
