caricatures of another era. Todays housewife is often someone who is lucky enough to escape the drudgery of paid labor. Of course, when Simone De Beauvoir wrote her books and
essays, things were quite different. According to a student, in Simone De Beauvoir s essay The married woman, the housewife is viewed in terms of functions in the
home; she equates cleaning with purging evil and explains that cleaning is more demeaning than cooking. It is explained, at least according to a student that in the essay, housework
is seen as worse than cooking because at least with cooking, one is able to get out of the house and meet with different vendors and so forth. Preparing food
is therefore more positive and can be pleasurable. Although it appears that the author does make a good case for the fact that cleaning is awful and demeaning, and
supports her statements well, there is another side to the argument. Indeed, it does appear that cooking is agreeable and is something for which schools are built. Men attend culinary
schools and go on to become great chefs. Cooking is a talent that is admired in this society and not exclusive for women. It is also true that cleaning can
be drudgery and that wealthy people have maids to do such chores. At the same time, there is a philosophy that suggests cleaning is not demeaning at all. Some Zen
buddhist sects for example see cleaning as helping one to align one with the things that surround them. In other words, by picking up a vase and dusting it, one
is showing appreciation and becoming in tune with his or her surroundings. By contrast, the rich woman who criticizes her housekeeper for missing a spot is missing out on becoming
