The wholly myopic approach to life through the hedonistic lens illustrates man's constant preoccupation with his own desires, often to the great detriment of the world around him. Given the philosophical definition of hedonism - "The ethical doctrine holding that only what is pleasant or has pleasant consequences is intrinsically good" (Editors, 2000) - there is no room left for the reality of pain and suffering in one's existence; to only experience pleasure without the equalizing element of struggle is to live only half a life. for the best life, hedonism is actually the conduit to a life fractured by falsehood. People need to experience pain, suffering and struggle in order to appreciate happiness and pleasure;
without the former, there is simply no way to gauge the importance of the latter. This seeming dichotomy is readily illustrated by examining an adolescent raised in a wealthy
family where no responsibilities were placed upon the individual to maintain himself, his living space or participate in the day-to-day events that comprise a conventional existence. Children in standard
families are brought up to appreciate what they earn with the introduction of an allowance; only after performing a requisite chore are they compensated for their time. This economic
structure teaches children that nothing comes without fair exchange, and validates that sometimes outcomes are not completely fair. Wealthy kids, on the other hand, are not typically taught the
same values and therefore draw the conclusion that everything in life is based upon a hedonistic perception. Having everything handed to them without being taught to appreciate the intrinsic
