promised significant reforms so that Americans who were not able to afford insurance or denied coverage due to pre-existing medical conditions could become insured and thereby receive access to healthcare.
This latest attempt at reform has proven to have a polarizing effect on Americans, dividing them largely upon party lines with liberals supporting this reform and conservatives claiming that
this is yet another unwanted government intrusion upon citizen rights to choose their own healthcare. First, it should be clear that healthcare reform should not be regarded as a
wholly political or economic issue. While it has political and economic implications, healthcare reform is, first and foremost, a human issue. Millions of Americans are currently without any
type of healthcare insurance, a statistic that is shameful for one of the most prosperous countries in the world. This number has been dramatically increasing for the past quarter
century, which means the present system is clearly not working. As a result, more Americans are dying because they are not getting medical attention until it is too late
because of its high costs. Healthcare reform is not only good for Americans, it will go a long way towards saving countless lives. II. Both Sides of the Debate
