increased freedoms and the development of a hybrid culture. Friedman (2000) is a pro globalization and puts forward the view in his book "The Lexus and the Olive Tree". Here the title can be seen as reflective of the world as we know it, the Lexus in the title of this book is reflective of "the drive for sustenance, improvement, prosperity and modernisation," (Friedman, 2000). However, the olive tree has a very different meaning, that of the aspects of life and culture that root us in the past. These may be influences such as religion, families, tribes or even nationalism, all of which need to evolve in order for the globe to become a single economy. We are told in this book that "The challenge in this era of globalisation - for countries and for individuals - is to find a healthy balance between preserving a sense of identity, home and community and doing what it takes to survive within the globalisation system" (Friedman 2000). However, Friedman, despite be in favour of globalisation and arguing that a balance needs to be achieved between global and local forces also sees the process of one that propagates American culture and the associated cultural icons (Friedman, 2000). Naomi Klein is against globalization and also sees the process as one tjhat is spreading American values and culture, however, in Kleins more cynical view this is a more sinister commercialization of culture that increases and perpetuates the US global hegemony. In her book No Logo Klein states that she does not believe that the aim is not the selling of America to the rest of the world in the way that Americanization is taking place, she describes it as "bringing a kind of market masala to everyone ...
