on Fort Sumter; no unjust government ruling from far away causing dissention; no sudden invasion of one nation by another; no demand for territory. It seems as if the war
was fought simply because Europe was a powder keg and everyone felt it was time to fight. There have been countless wars fought in the history of mankind, and this
was one of the strangest, as well as one of the deadliest. According to Dr. Gary Sheffield, many people today would agree with Baldrick, a character from a completely
insane BBC series called Blackadder Goes Forth, set during the First World War.1 According to Baldrick, the war started when "Archie Duke shot an ostrich because he was hungry. His
garbled version of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary reflects popular opinion: that the issues were not worth the ensuing bloodbath."2 While most non-historians would probably agree, those
who have made a study of the conflict would not.3 The Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary) are alleged to have created the conditions for conflict at the very least; some
