and what Gatsby is doing at the time hes observed. Discussion F. Scott Fitzgeralds novel is often called the best novel ever written by a 20th century American author. Fitzgerald
did something amazing with his book: he held up the "American Dream" to praise and ridicule at the same time. He showed that the idea of the Dream-that by working
hard anyone could succeed-was still alive, but he also denigrated it by showing how it could destroy someone like Gatsby. Perhaps never before has a novel worked at cross purposes
to such a degree and done it successfully. But is Jay great? The dictionary defines great as "of much more than ordinary extent, volume, etc."; its secondary meaning is
"much higher in some quality or degree." Since Jay Gatsby is not described as being extremely tall or hugely fat, we can assume that "great" in this context doesnt refer
to his size but to his personality and specifically, those qualities that set him apart from the others to whom he is compared. Nick Carraway narrates the book, and since
he also takes part in the story he cannot be considered a totally objective narrator. He states frankly that he likes Gatsby, and for that reason its possible that he
colors the accounts he gives. However, he is the closest thing we have to a neutral observer, since he isnt related to Gatsby and his relationship with Daisy is tenuous:
she is his "second cousin once removed" (Fitzgerald 5). He hasnt seen her or her husband Tom Buchanan in years. The events in the novel unfold over the space of
