euthanasia is ever a proper alternative has become a very public debate. Because there are more chronic terminal medical situations than ever before, with the many HIV and AIDS
related conditions, the issue of assisted suicide is becoming an increasingly common consideration (Marzuk, 1994). This poses an extremely perplexing dilemma for members of the medical establishment, who have
what amounts to a social contract with their patients (Altun and Ersoy, 2003, p. 462). Doctors and nurses are legally obligated to relieve pain and suffering, but they are
also ethically expected to be preservers of life, not what society could accurately describe as killers even if the circumstances deem it an act of mercy. When critically assessing this
issue, it is helpful to first examine what exactly is meant by terminal illness. An illness is usually regarded as terminal if the life expectancy is less than a
period of one year (Marzuk, 1994). A chronic and debilitating condition such as diabetes, for example, cannot be regarded as terminal since the total life expectancy is several years
in many instances. While euthanasia, at first glance, would certainly appear to be human in situations where the patient has received what is tantamount to a death sentence, because
of the "uncertain definition of suicide in the context of a terminal illness" (Marzuk, 1994, p. 497), the medical community is frequently divided on whether or not assisted suicide is
a legitimate option. Often ignored in this argument is the effect that euthanasia or assisting in the suicide of patients has on physicians. Several physicians who have participated
