and nationalism is on the minds of many individuals, especially those who are dubious of the role citizenship will play once the European Union is finalised. The vision of a
United States of Europe is the dream of some and the nightmare of others. For the Euro sceptics in means giving up sovereignty to live as part of a giant
federal state where Germany is the most influential power. For those in favour of Europe it means a single currency with transparent prices freer trade, greater mobility, extended rights and
the citizenship of a more influential organisation. However, the basis that many will judge the future on, even if a United States of Europe is a far fetched idea will
be the way in which higher European integration will effect them as an individual. To put a finer point to it, individuals should be able to determine whether they will
be better of as citizens of Europe or as citizens of their own nation country. Citizenship is the definition of the legal and political status of an individual in their
own nation state. It is the role of the citizen which will determine their rights and relationship with the state (Lemke PG). If we look back on history many of
the wars fought over the last century, and more, have had the rise of nationalism as a root cause. This is certainly the case for both the World Wars of
the twentieth century, where had it not been for the rise of nationalism many countries may have remained on the sidelines and the death toll may have been much lower.
Alternatively, without the feeling of nationalism there would be less to draw people together and ensure that the greater good was served. Without the entrance of many of the countries
