kind of person. Even in each portion of the country, there are smaller and smaller sections until you get down to blocks of people. People are bored in the areas
that they live, but they would not know how to function in the neighboring town. On the other hand, Gregory Rodriguezs "Mongrel America" argues that we are so blended that
separated races do not apply to the country anymore. Is diversity in the United States all that important? Have we, or have we not, truly become the melting pot that
we claim to be? As Rodriguez points out, the original melting pot included only Whites. Blacks and other non-Whites just did not count. Now, Mexicans and others of Latin-decent are
no longer the minority in states such as California and Texas. Multiracial marriages are a common practice now, between all races. Brooks doesnt see the multiracial marriages that Rodriguez
sees. Brooks sees that people in the United States move around based on where others like themselves are located. Cultural affinity is still very important to people, which makes it
difficult for this melting pot to really form. If anything, we are happiest segregated into our separate groups. It is merely human nature for us to section off into different
groups. We might have a slight rise in the rise of middle-class and upper-middle class African-American families, but they still spend the majority of their time with other Blacks.
Brooks does admit that there are a few states in the United States that are integrated, but his examples are Arizona and Nevada. His reasons for the integration are different
