were unable to carry on with their jobs, some were simply unable to get to work, other decided that their priorities were with themselves or their families. In some cases
it was not only an absence from work that took place, but actions that could be determined to be illegal. Some actions that may appear to be against the law
on the surface may have been justified, such as police officers using vehicles form a car showroom for rescue purposes after the police force lost more than 300 vehicles, but
others such as theft and looting are not as easily justifiable. Chief Warren Riley is taking a hard line against police officers who deserted their posts and broke the law
many are loosing their jobs, despite returning while others are suffering suspension. It may be argued that those taking time off without permission may have had good reasons, but ethically
there are many arguments on the side of Chief Riley. The police perform an essential task; their presence helps to retain order in environments where there may otherwise be
law breaking and unruly behavior. It may be argued that the role of the police is not only mandated by social norms but is also accepted as a result of
the consensus paradigm. The consensus paradigm means that there is a general consensus regarding what is or is not expected ant ethical (Martin, 2005). IUn this caser it may be
argued that that the police were needed, and that there will have been a general consensus in the population that were in, or impacted by the hurricane that the
police were needed in the aftermath in order to perform a number of duties, which may have been acting as a deterrent to crime as well a s catching criminals
