Towards the end of the century, efforts were made to save the rain forests, but little has been done that has been effective in accomplishing that end. Why? In part, there is greed in the picture, but because industry goes ahead and effectively destroys the rain forests, they may be gone decades from now. Others do not see it that way and complain that the environmentalists are the ones who are off base. It is fine to use resources as they are there for all humans to enjoy. Who is right? In philosophy there are no right or wrong answers. According to utilitarianism for example, one has to decipher what is the best situation for all concerned. Utilitarianism is a moral theory whereby an action is considered correct if it conforms to the principle of utility ("Utilitarianism," 2003). Under this doctrine, an action conforms to the principle of utility only if its performance is thought to be more productive of pleasure or happiness, or to more prevent pain or unhappiness, than any other alternative (2003). Another way to look at it is that the value of the consequences of an action is determined only by the welfare of individuals (2003). It is important to note that this topic involves the environment and inanimate things that do not have feelings or ideas. It also involves the future well being of people in society. Hence, when using theories of utility it is important to keep in mind that this unique situation prompts intense attention to detail in that future events are involved as are elements that are not human.
