as we know it, we still attend plays by ancient authors like Sophocles and Aristophanes, and the influence of these early playwrights is still felt in contemporary works. This paper
examines Aristotles theories of tragedy and whether or not the classic American play Death of a Salesman can be considered as such under these guidelines. Discussion There is no doubt
whatever that Arthur Millers play is a tragedy. Willy Lomans mental disintegration, his gradual loss of his grip on reality and his eventual suicide are moving and tragic. They show
us what many critics have called the death of the American Dream. Willy has worked hard all his life only to fail at the end. He has cheated on his
wife and his sons are estranged from him; they are failures as well, even though they seem largely unaware of their own incompetence and the hopelessness of their dreams. Willy
has raised the boys to believe that they are so special they can succeed in whatever they choose to do simply because of who they are, not because of their
skills, abilities or efforts. Like Willy, they believe dreams are enough, and as a result, they are unhappy and resentful, since they have achieved little even though they are in
their 30s when the play opens. Linda, Willys wife, desperately tries to hold the family together, acting as the peacemaker and providing support to Willy, even as she watches
him slip further into dementia. She is aware of his attempted suicides, but clings to the hope that he will somehow recover and become successful in his career, and regain
his mental and emotional stability. In short, the Loman family could be any family, raised to believe in the greatness of America and the opportunities it offers, only to find
