as good. China is perhaps the second largest economy in the world, but there are signs of stunted growth. There is debate on the subject of course, and few would
believe that this is the case after watching the show China put on during the 2008 Summer Olympics, but some authors have claimed that the economy is unstable. Of
course, when examining Chinas economy, one must look at both the general economy and its international trade experience. A slow down in trade is not necessarily indicative of a slowing
in the overall economy. Still, the rapid rate of growth for China does to some extent point to a negative situation. Is China slowing? Is it stagnating? What is going
on with China and how might international trade theory help to explain the current phenomenon? In exploring Chinas economy and its participation in trade, it pays to look at both
international trade theory and Chinas economic history. II. International Trade Theory Through the 1980s, international trade theory has been linked with rather conservative concepts (Krugman, 1994). At the
same time, during the 1970s, a different approach had been emerging in respect to this body of knowledge (Krugman, 1994). Researchers were beginning to ask more questions about why
international trade is a reality (Krugman, 1994). The author gives an example of the difference between the traditional and new theory, suggesting that the older theory would see trade in
respect to products like wheat; yet, new theory is tied to items like airplanes (Krugman, 1994). Clearly, trade is much more significant than it had been in the past.
