However, it is also important to realize that while the Buddhists do not believe in a God or in Gods, they do believe in an ultimate spiritual
reality, and that through the process of reincarnation, the person travels closer and closer to enlightenment (nirvana) (Buddhism and Hinduism Compared, 2004). The Buddhists believe that eventually all individuals
will reach enlightenment and that the suffering that people experience in the world is due to their attachments to things and to people (Buddhism and Hinduism Compared, 2004).
Therefore, it is clear that while the Buddhists could be considered atheists based upon their belief that there is no God, they are
in fact very spiritual people (Buddhism and Hinduism Compared, 2004). If the definition of atheism is based upon the notion of the recognition of a God (or gods), then
it becomes essential to apply the definition to Buddhists by recognizing them as atheists (Buddhism and Hinduism Compared, 2004). But such a definition implies a complete lack of spiritual
recognition, which is not representative of Buddhism (Buddhism and Hinduism Compared, 2004). And so, while it may seem easy to target
