of gender and race are relatively well understood and can be transparent where they occur, but discrimination based on age may be more hidden, making it more difficult to eliminate
and supporting its practice. It may be argued that this is one of the key reasons why Britain may be seen as an ageist society. While discrimination based on gender
and race were legislated against with many cases brought against employers in the 1970s and 1980s (Lockton, 2008) anti age discrimination was only introduced in the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations
(2006) which made it illegal for employers to discriminate against employees on the basis of age (ACAS, 2006). This late introduction indicates a lower level of importance that has
been attached to ageist behaviour, and unlike former moves to reduce discrimination there has not be the same level of aggressive pursuance of employers, with fewer cases brought. Looking
at society as a whole there does appear to be a practice where age discrimination takes place and is accepted. The BBC, a bastion of the British media has been
accused of ageist behaviour, in April 2007 the 55 year old new presented Moira Stewart lost her job, with many clams in the media this was part of the BBCs
attempt to attract younger audiences, this was followed by a spate of other departures, associated with claims of ageism, including both Fiona Bruise and Nick Rosss departures for the BBC
program Crimewatch (The Telegraph, 2007). In 2009 the BBC was found guilty of age discrimination in an employment tribunal, for the sacking of 53 year old Miriam OReilly, who
was rep[laced with a young presenter (Binliff, 2011). As a result they have had to apologise as well as setting up a new set of guidelines to prevent this from
