UK into a less class bound system that has as a foundation a meritocracy. Others will argue that class cannot be escaped, and as such it is still determinate of
social structure. The determination of class itself may be seen as one that is changing. The application of the Registrar Generals system is still in wide use, where occupation
is the determinant of class (Vallely, 1998). This is a rigid framework which may have indicated the class of an individual in the past with the class associated with specific
income levels and social expectations. This model is now changing, many labour intensive jobs may be better remunerated than the white collar jobs that were traditionally classified as a higher
class. In addition there are the other aspects such as life style and self perception that reflect in the way an individual behaves. Stuart Hall (1992),
argues that class is becoming less important due to the impact it has on identity weakening and class barriers breaking down. Indeed, in looking at the studies of class mobility
it would be hard to argue otherwise, changing classes between generations may be seen as indicators of a society that is based more on ability and skills rather than family
background and inheritance; a meritocracy. Class mobility between the generation and within the generations can be seen as caused by many different factors that are not indicative of the underlying
identity. These include the social condition of the country such as the economic condition as well as the international position, for example the way that the wars influences the country
