population (Tannock and Rucklidge, 2000), however some studies have indicates patches where levels of the population well in excess of this estimated level of prevalence have been observed, which may
indicate that there is an over diagnosis. The main drug used to treat ADHD; Ritalin has saw an increased use of more than 250% between 1990 and 1998 (Kissinger, 1998),
and 700% overall throughout the 1990s (Le Fever, 2003). There are some studies to support the idea that there may be a large over-diagnosis of the condition, as seen
with the study by Richman (et al, 2004) where there was a significant over diagnosis in a sample of 177 children. Initially, 18% had been diagnosed with ADHD, but following
the use of DSM-IV testing only 6% were found to be classified with ADHD (Richman et al, 2004). This was a single study but the results may be used
to indicate the general over diagnosis if the same results were to be found in other study groups. The potential difficulty with the assessment of this condition is the high
level of reliance based on self reporting and observations of others. It is also easy to claim over use of pharmaceuticals due to high increased use, but this may also
be down to increased acceptance and a low baseline. To assess whether or not there is an over diagnosis the condition itself needs to be considered explaining how and
why there is the potential for over diagnosis to occur, However, potential does not mean it is occurring, so the evidence for an against this also needs to be
examined. The treatment of childhood behaviour patterns was not generally treated until the second half of the twentieth century. The changes started to occur in the 1960s when there
