an article entitled "Sleepy Hollow: Fearful Pleasures and the Nightmare of History," Hughes (2005) writes about Irvings "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." In the piece, Hughes (2005) critiques the authors work and points out things such as the fact that the postscript had been designed to protect the piece from criticism and that the story is entrenched in romance (Hughes, 2005). He critiques style only a bit by noting that there was an "oddity" pertinent to a sentence in the piece (Hughes, 2005). "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" may be compared and contrasted with Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter. In examining Nathaniel Hawthornes novel, Hunt (2009) claims that people enjoy reading such works because they act to display moral and political certitude, something that people today enjoy. Hunt (2009) also claims that the book allows the reader to draw his or her own conclusions. Each of the works "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and The Scarlet Letter evoke emotion, ideas of romance, and a tendency to try to glean a moral from the story. Irvings "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is about Ichabod Crane, a man who pursues a young woman for marriage. The woman essentially has two choices, or two suitors, and because Crane was followed by a mysterious headless horseman, he does not return to marry Katrina. She in turn marries someone else. The story is succinct, something that makes for a good, memorable plot. The writing style is rather matter of fact and easy to understand. There is little in the way of flowery language.
